Scouts : Centenary Camp - Nov 2007
Posted by Skip on 2007/11/26 18:00:00 (2144 reads)

In November, we held a group Centenary Camp on a private beach near Muscat. As part of their creative challenge/writer's badge, our Scouts have created some news articles about the camp. Please read on and leave a comment if you like them.

The Scout centenary camp 2007

Day 1

This was my 1st scout camp. I was very excited the night before. My mum
helped me pack my bags and we went over the check list twice!
Eventually I fell asleep that night. The following day after school, my dad
drove me to the camp and after saying good bye I helped set up camp which
was strenuous work but we were rewarded with a meal of spaghetti
bolognaise - Delicious!
After lunch we put out our sleeping bags and this was followed by an
inspection! It took us a while to get sorted out. We then had dinner
following which we saw a slide show about Baden Powell, who started
Scouting on Brown Sea Island 1907 (100 years ago). This camp was a centenary
camp celebrating 100 years of scouting. We knew scouts and cubs all over the
world had their own centenary camps either earlier in the summer, or like
us if you live outside of Europe, later when the weather is cooler. After
the cubs went to bed the scouts played Hunter Force, a boisterous and lively
game when you were either hunting or being hunted! This was my favourite
game ever! Around midnight we got into our sandy sleeping bags and fell
asleep at last.

Day 2

We woke about 3:00 am in the morning and waited for the leaders to round us
up. A tasty breakfast of sausages, omelettes and baked beans awaited us at
the food area. After breakfast the Beavers joined us for the day and we
started the activities. We were divided into groups: The Leather Backs,
The Riddlies, The Logger Heads and The Hawk Bills(these names are all
different types of turtles). First we did pioneering which was quite taxing!
We carried a cub or beaver on a rack we made out of wood and rope, through
an obstacle course and then we did rafting when we had to paddle out to sea
and back again. After those two activities, it was lunch followed by
crafting when we made our own woggles and Alien Adventure which was a
survival test. Then we went on the beach and threw water bombs at the group
carrying the water filled buckets. After this awesome activity we had dinner
which I ate ravenously after all the hard work of the day! Our hunger
satisfied, we built an enormous bon fire as the Beavers did a performance,
the Cubs sang songs and the Scouts did skits (short hilarious performances)
After the Cubs went to bed and the Beavers had been taken home reluctantly,
the Scouts played another game of Hunter Force and again around mid night we
went to bed.

Day 3

We all woke about 5:00 in the morning and packed up our bags ready to leave.
The leaders gave us another inspection and then we headed down for
breakfast. After flag down, we said good bye and looked through lost
property and put down the tents. After we sorted everything out it was sadly
time to go home, though I was looking forward to seeing my family again. I
really enjoyed this camp and I hope we have another one just like this soon!

1st Oman Scout Troop Centenary Camp 2007

On our Centenary camp we stayed for 2 nights in a private beach club in Muscat on
the 21st until the 23rd of November 2007. The Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and
Explorer Scouts all went together. I was a patrol leader of the Panthers in
the Scouts.

When we first went to the camp we took our tents and went to where the
scouts were camping. Then we set up our patrols tents, I had four people in
my patrol so we had two tents with two people in each. Afterwards we went
down to where the cubs, scouts and Explorer scouts met up ( the Beavers come
the next day). We had a talk about where to go for emergencies with our
leader Skip and what the safety rules were, then we discussed our programme
for the few days we were staying which included: crafting, rafting, survival
skills, football, assault course, tug of war and pioneering.

After we had the talk we did flag break and a game where the scouts had to
find the explorers and once they were all found the explorer scouts had to
find us.

The next day we had a game of football at 6:00am. Afterwards we went down to
breakfast, then we started the programme and we were all split into
groups( beavers/cubs/scouts). I started off with crafting in which we had to
make a woggle in for our centenary presentation, a key ring and a clay
model of something. Then we had lunch. Afterwards we did rafting. We made
the raft out of an oil drum, planks of wood and a few ropes and then tested
it in the sea..it was a success!!! Next we did pioneering where we had to
make a stretcher out of wood and ropes.

At night we did the presentation where Nathan (our other scout leader) blew
a kudu horn just like Baden Powell did at sun-rise at Brown Sea Island. I
then did flag down and we were presented with our woggles. After the
presentation we watched a quick movie on Baden Powell. We then made a
massive fire and did a load of skits in patrols! We then played man hunt in
the dark. I was one of the last to be caught!

The following morning we got ready and had breakfast. Then we went into our
groups and did tug of war. We won all our games. Next we moved on to the
assault course like they do in the army. We didn't get the best times but we
still did well. Finally we had a football tournament where we won all the
games and scored the most goals. We then packed away everything and had an
inspection and tidied all the rubbish away. Overall it was the best camp
ever and hopefully we will do another one soon!

Scout Camp

On the 21st to the 23rd November 2007, the 1st Oman Troop were going to go
on a centenery camp with the Cubs and Beavers.

I arrived at the beach club at about 16:30. Quite a few scouts were already
there but David was the only one there in my patrol so we set up our tents.
After all the tents were ready we went down on our now so-called meeting
point to watch videos of Baden Pal and learnt two new songs for our Omani
Guests which were coming tomorrow. When we finished we got changed and had
supper.

It was a delicious supper of Spaghetti Bolognaise, followed by hot
chocolate and cake. We then split into 4 groups for team games. I was in
the loggerheads. We then proceeded to build clothes lines with 5 Poles,
lots of rope and a few pegs. The Cubs and went to bed while the Scouts and
Explorers played my favourite game, hunterforce. I had an excellent time
even though I was one of the first to be captured. We went to bed at
11:30pm.

It was an early start of 7:00am. We had egg and bacon for breakfast, the
beavers arrived and then it was time to start the team games! Our first
activity was rafting where we had to build a raft by tying barrels to wood
with rope. Then we took it out to sea. It was really fun.

After this it was Alien Adventure. This was was we were aliens and had
landed on a distant planet. We were all tied together and had a life supply
(an egg in an blown up bag). If we dropped this we lost points. we had to
complete a few tasks like this. When the points were counted up our group
won. This led us up to lunch time. It was chicken and egg sandwiches.

Arts and Crafts followed lunch. This was where we made models with salt
dough and coloured in our woggles for our new neckies. It was good fun.

Next we had to build something out of wood and rope to carry a person. You
then had to take them around on an obstacle course. This was great even
though we lost. This was the end of all the activities. Now it was the
time to renew our promise and receive a new 100 year of scouting Neckie.
However, we were disappointed when our Omani Guests didn't arrive.

Our new neckie was a very colourful and consisted of purple, red, orange and
yellow. We finished at about 5:30pm to get ready for supper, skits and a
bonfire.
First we practised out skits while eating hamburgers for supper. The
bonfire was enormous, the diameter was around 2 metres!

Our skit was first. Everyone laughed like mad. There were a few other but
I think ours was the best. We played another good game of Hunter Force and
went to bed at 10:30pm.

The next morning we prepared to leave. I was really sad but at least we
still had some activities to do. We had breakfast and then played tug of
war, followed by an obstacle course and then a game of football. We then
had a water balloon fight.

This was where the groups held a plank with water in buckets while people on
either sides threw water balloons at them. Finally, we had a good old swim.
Lunchtime, packed up camp, flag down and then sad farewells. I thanked all
the leaders before we left. This was definitely the best three days of my
life!
